Overcoming the Prefix Syndrome

I hate being a minority.

I wouldn’t mind it so much if it wasn’t flashed in my face like a finger-pointing strobe light. I wouldn’t mind it so much if it didn’t set me apart from other students and a "Native American" prefix was attached to me to prove that diversity in journalism is on the rise.

ASNE Reporter staffers bring diverse experiences
This year’s student journalists at the ASNE Reporter include everyone from the founder of an industrial music Web magazine to a reporter who has covered a Wienermobile to a photographer who won an award for documenting the life of a woman with cerebral palsy.

Ready, set, vote: The race is on among 12 board candidates

Twelve candidates are vying for six spots on the ASNE Board of Directors this year, among them five incumbents.

The candidates stressed the importance of strong leadership as the economy slows and the value of increasing diversity in newsrooms, despite shrinking budgets. A few editors emphasized the importance of further integrating small newspapers into ASNE and developing more programs and initiatives addressing their needs and concerns. Members of ASNE can vote for six of the 12 candidates until 4 p.m. Thursday at the ASNE registration desk.

On a tour of the Pentagon and the Central Intelligence Agency, about 35 editors and reporters met with Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld; Gen. Henry Shelton, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and CIA Director George Tenet.
