JAY HARRIS SPEAKS
LISTEN TO THE HARRIS SPEECH
Jay Harris says newspapers' duties do not decline with revenues
Former newspaper publisher Jay T. Harris told editors at ASNE Friday that his decision to speak out against market pressures in the newspaper industry was not an “act of betrayal.” Rather than an act against a newspaper company, it was an “act of fidelity” to the values of journalism. “I had watched a long train of corporate abuses against the traditions and core values of a great profession and a great company,” Harris said at the organization’s closing luncheon. “I had witnessed enough.” “It was like watching a loved-one commit suicide-- unintentionally.”

Newsrooms must walk
the ‘diversity’ walk,
not just talk the talk
Coming into the ASNE Reporter project, I was full of excitement. This week promised the opportunity to work with the nation’s top editors and rising students. All that pride soon disappeared though, with the first night of the conference.

NEW TURNS | WILLIE J. ALLEN JR.
Repaying some debts through journalism
I am a 40-year-old senior at San Francisco State University majoring in photojournalism. My father was a chief petty officer in the Navy and my mother was a floor manager for the Navy Exchange store. I was born a Navy brat at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City.

BRIDGES | ICESS FERNÁNDEZ
Bridging the cultural divide
I was 22 years old when I finally learned to spell my last name correctly. I was in Havana in the house my father grew up in, and I went into the matchbox-sized kitchen to look at my family’s ration book, la libreta.

IDENTITY | ANGELIQUE SOENARIE
The Importance of Differences
My family is the definition of diversity. I am Indonesian and Filipino. I have two aunties who are African-American, one uncle who is Jewish, an aunt who is German, another aunt who is Italian. My great-grandfather was Filipino, my great-grandmother was Hawaiian. When my family looks at each other we just see a family.

PERSPECTIVE | JASON BEGAY
Overcoming the Prefix Syndrome
I hate being a minority. I wouldn't mind it so much if it didn't set me apart from other students and a "Native American" prefix was attached to me to prove that diversity in journalism is on the rise.
