ASNE Reporter staffers bring diverse experiences

This year’s student journalists at the ASNE Reporter include everyone from the founder of an industrial music Web magazine to a reporter who has covered a Wienermobile to a photographer who won an award for documenting the life of a woman with cerebral palsy.

Willie Allen, a San Francisco State University senior, is the photo editor at the Golden Globe [X]press and a free-lance photographer for The San Francisco Independent. He received the “Spirit of the Workshop” award for a photo story on a Lebanon, Mo., woman with cerebral palsy.

Jason Begay, a senior at the University of Montana, grew up on the Navajo Reservation in New Mexico and Arizona. He has interned at The Oakland (Calif.) Tribune, The Wichita (Kan.) Eagle and the Duluth (Minn.) News Tribune. This summer he will be an intern at The Oregonian in Portland.

Anna Chan, a University of Washington senior, founded a Web magazine, WetWorks Electrozine, which focuses on the industrial music scene. Ms. Chan will be the student online producer of the ASNE Reporter. She participated in the Asian American Journalists Association’s New Media Student Project in New York and The Seattle Times’ Urban Newspaper Workshop.

Shannon Comes At Night, a University of Montana junior majoring in print, is a member of the Blackfeet Nation from Heart Butte, Mont. He is a reporter for the Montana Kaimin, UM’s student newspaper. This summer he will intern at the Missoula Missoulian.

Christina Denardo of Williamstown, N.J., is a senior and newspaper major at Syracuse University. She has worked for the Daily Orange and has written for the Delaware County Daily Times, the Courier-Post in Cherry Hill, N.J., and the Scripps Howard Foundation Wire. In Washington, she covered marches, congressional hearings and the Supreme Court. In her hometown, she once wrote about the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile.

Cicely K. Dyson, a junior and a magazine major at the University of Missouri-Columbia, was born and raised in St. Louis. She is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists and is on the executive board of the Journalism Students Association.

Monica Hande, a senior at the University of Oregon studying news/editorial journalism, is a copy editor at Salem’s Statesman Journal. She has worked on the copy desk of the campus paper, the Oregon Daily Emerald, and also interned at The Arizona Republic through the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund.

Icess Fernandez, a University of Houston junior, is a stringer with the Houston Chronicle, covering city hall. She interned for The Pasadena (Texas) Citizen and worked at The Daily Cougar, Houston, reporting on campus and community issues.

Jewel Gopwani of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., is a senior at the University of Michigan. She was the managing news editor of the Michigan Daily and has also worked at Crain’s Detroit Business and the Detroit Free Press.

Amy Leang is a senior at Ball State University, majoring in photojournalism and journalism graphics. She is president of the Asian American Student Association on campus. She has interned at The News-Sentinel in Fort Wayne, Ind., and The Raleigh News & Observer. This summer, she will intern at The Virginian-Pilot.

Johnny Lewis, a senior at Southwest Texas State University, is studying journalism and photography. He is a reporter for the Daily University Star, where he also served as the opinions editor, a page designer and a copy editor. He has also free-lanced for New Braunfel’s (Texas) Herald-Zeitung.

Kimberly Moy, a Northwestern University junior, was design editor at the Daily Northwestern, receiving first place in Front Page Layout from the Illinois Press Association. Ms. Moy, who has also studied in Spain, interned for two newspapers in New Jersey, the Daily Record in Parsippany and The Star-Ledger in Newark. Ms. Moy will intern at The Oregonian in Portland and The Sun in Baltimore this summer.

Olivia Muñoz, a sophomore at Northwestern University, entered journalism after she saw the impact of Mi Gente Publications on her hometown of Saginaw, Mich. She was a staff writer for the Central Michigan (University) Life and has reported for the Hispanic Link News Service, where she is also a free-lance columnist.

Angelique Soenarie studies at the Journalism Institute for Minorities at Wayne State University. She worked as an editorial aide at the Detroit Free Press. Last summer, she interned at The News-Sentinel in Fort Wayne, Ind., covering police and writing stories on public safety.

Mary Vuong, a senior at the University of Southern California, is a writer and a copy editor for the Bamboo Offshoot, an Asian Pacific American publication at USC. She interned for The Orange County Register and the Daily Breeze in Torrance, Calif.

Krissah Williams, a University of Texas senior, will intern at The Washington Post this summer. Having worked four years on the Daily Texan, Ms. Williams is its development editor. She has interned at the Houston Chronicle, Austin-American Statesman and Houston Defender. She also helped create the Black Ink newsletter of the UT chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists.
