ASNE supports OAS press advocate
By Victor Chen
ASNE REporter
ASNE's board of directors approved a resolution supporting the creation
of a permanent press freedom advocate at the Organization of American States,
based in Washington, D.C.
The person would be responsible for defending the freedom of the press
throughout the hemisphere. The Clinton administration also has endorsed
the proposal.
The OAS, established in 1890, is a regional organization advocating
democracy, human rights and international trade among 34 countries in North
America, Latin America and the Caribbean.
The general assembly of the OAS will meet in Venezuela later this year.

The new math, ASNE style

Diversity, credibility and sex are the hot issues being discussed at
the75th ASNE convention sponsored by the organization that celebrated its
75th anniversary last year.
Confused? Here's the low-down.
This year, ASNE, which was founded in 1922, is celebrating its 76th
year. So, it would figure that the 1998 convention would also be the 76th.
Wrong.
Blame it on World War II.
According to Craig Branson, ASNE's publications director, the one-year
discrepancy is because the 1945 convention was canceled when the U.S. was
at war.
"It was pretty well explained last year that it was the 75th year of
ASNE but only the 74th convention," Branson said.
Well, yeah, but there are new members here.
Still, Branson said there has hardly been any confusion.
Really?
