Examining Credibility

N. Christian Anderson III
Publisher and CEO, The Orange County Register Santa Ana, Calif.

1999-2000 ASNE President

At the heart of building newspaper credibility is the practice of good journalism day in and day out. The work ASNE has done on credibility over the past three years reminds us that we must constantly strive to meet our journalistic ideals, look at our challenges through the eyes of others and be willing to show leadership in the newsroom and in the community.

1999-2000 Chair, ASNE Ethics & Values Committee

For all of this study and thought to have much impact on journalism, editors have to make it happen – by looking for ways to improve credibility in their own newsrooms, following through with staffers at all levels and having a lively give-and-take of what worked – and what didn't work. And newsrooms must be willing to involve readers in the discussion.
