Bitsy was a product of creative license, a fictional character who made
six appearances in the Post's coverage of the Palm Beach social season.
Photos of a model chosen to be Bitsy were "photoshopped" into real photos
of society events, and brief storylines and cutlines were written to accompany
the photos (here's Bitsy pouring champagne onto someone's head, there's
Bitsy getting booted from a restaurant). Readers were told Bitsy was a society
wannabe, a vibrant "Ab Fab" sort of character whose dream was to meet Marla
Maples.
Editors at first were concerned Palm Beach society would consider itself
scorned, but the response was the opposite: Society doyennes called and
invited Bitsy to their parties, thing she was a great publicity stunt.
Editors were careful not to make fun of any real people, only of Bitsy.
And, in the end, Marla Maples offered to pose with her.
