The Press reacted to the debate on Capitol Hill about federal financing
of the arts by seeing how federal money affected the people and institutions
of New Jersey: Would anyone notice if the subsidies were eliminated? The
Press filed FOIA requests to obtain 10 years of computer records from the
NEA, NEH and Institute of Museum Services. Reporters were able to review
70,000 records and identify the big grant winners - and potential losers
- in the state. Among things learned: 10 organizations got 40 percent of
all the federal arts money coming into the state. The package made an "inside
the beltway" issue relevant to our readers.
