An American Editor
Tim Gallagher
Birthday: June 22, 1956
Hometown: Camarillo, Calif.
Marital status: Married for 22 years
Children: Gabe, 21; Zack, 18; Ben, 15; Delaney, 9; Rose, 5, (now
our foster child soon to be adopted)
Self-portrait: Inspiring, encouraging, focused, funny, unconventional.
Inspiration: Pope John Paul II. He is courageous. He speaks his
truths no matter who is in the audience. He does not round the edges or
try to appease. He has his beliefs and he speaks them. I wish I were more
like him.
Greatest feat: Our marriage. My wife has enough sense for four
people and enough passion for six. Our partnership and love is the best
part of my life.
Bad habit: Oreos
Luxury defined: A warm summer night, a cold beer, and my three
sons and I at Dodger Stadium watching the Mets beat the home team.
My newspaper’s strength: Our staff is bright and incredibly dedicated.
It is willing to try and to fail. We’re not afraid to break tradition.
Most admired editor: Harry Moskos, editor of the Knoxville News-Sentinel.
He has an energy and integrity I have always tried to emulate.
Favorite publication: Money magazine and Sports Illustrated.
Favorite comic: “For Better or For Worse”
Best part of job: The four or five times a year when I am in
a zone on my weekly column and it takes about 20 minutes to write it. There
are hardly any revisions. I’ve nailed what I wanted to say in the first
draft.
Worst part of job: Talking to someone who has been wronged by
the newspaper through our own indifference, arrogance or sloppiness. What
can you say?
TV program: “The Simpsons.” It is by far the best satire on television.
Books at bedside: “Hometown,” by Tracy Kidder, and the Bible.
