New ASNE publications to help you work better
Examining Our Credibility: Building Reader Trust: This report
of the ASNE Journalism Credibility Project examines initiatives undertaken
by “test-site” newspapers in the areas of accuracy, connecting with communities
and bias and sensational coverage. These experiments are designed to be
useful and applicable to all newspapers. A 76-page book, $15 ($30 outside
the United States).
Extending the Brand: The effort of newspapers to further their
brand is what’s behind this report, which uses lessons and case studies
from around the nation. The Partnerships and Diversification Committee
discusses convergence and how to extend the newspaper’s brands — onto the
Web, into TV partnerships, even into book publishing. A 46-page report,
$15 ($25 outside the United States).
The Editors’ Guide to Newspaper Design: A team of designers,
editors and others explore readers’ needs, the WED approach, branding,
redesigns, international vs. U.S. design, and how to develop a visual toolbox
in this special issue of The American Editor. At a bargain price, you can
afford for your whole newsroom to benefit from their labors. 32-page magazine,
$5 ($10 outside the United States).
The New Journalists: Developing a newspaper Internet strategy
goes beyond slapping up a Web site. A noted educator and some newspaper
pioneers explore what’s really involved and what managers should expect.
Newspaper tabloid, $2 ($5 outside the United States).
The Local News Handbook: Although most editors know local news
when they see it, this extensive, hands-on report attempts to define it
more completely. Full of research and great concepts — some from outside
newspapers — the handbook asks what readers want and what is essential.
A 210-page book, $15 ($40 outside the United States).
