Institute for Journalism Excellence

Professors learn at newspapers

Teaching journalism professors.

That’s the goal of ASNE’s annual Institute for Journalism Excellence. By taking educators out of the classroom and putting them in the newsroom, ASNE — with the help of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation — brings them closer to the profession and vice versa.

Here are two professors’ experience. 23 professors participated in the summer 1999 program, from big schools and small, and they went to a variety of newsroom environments, ranging from The Oregonian to The Post-Tribune of Northwest Indiana in Gary.

Regardless of the size, however, the professors learned more about daily journalism and taught the news staffers a thing or two, through brown-bag lunches, critiques and coaching sessions.

This year’s journalism professors and their host newspapers are listed on page 24.
