Tips for handling graphic news
Although most newspapers have guidelines about graphic story content and language,
many editors have their own rules, gleaned from experience and common sense.
Here are some suggestions from editors interviewed for this story:
- Treat your readers like adults. Most intelligent adults don’t need common
terms defined or explained in detail. And most adults are not offended by
detailed descriptions if they are needed to understand the complete story.
- Make sure reporters and photographers are not censoring themselves by omitting
some material from unedited copy. Whether questionable material should be
published should be a topic discussed by all staff members. Reporters and
photographers should realize they have input.
- Listen to feedback. Controversial stories will generate reader response.
Take it seriously.
- Never use off-color or graphic material solely for the purpose of a laugh
or a joke.
- Know your newspaper’s audience. Just because another news source publishes
something does not mean it’s appropriate for your readers.
