ASNE on the move
Training to cover the new Latino community
The Small Newspapers Committee and the Diversity Committee are jointly sponsoring
a weekend training session in February designed to help editors improve coverage
of the long-term issues spawned by the historic influx of Latinos to the South
and the Midwest.
It’s inexpensive, informative and fun. We’ve limited the class to 35 to insure
lots of discussion and questions.
“We’re one of those newspapers, with a suddenly burgeoning Hispanic population
in part of our circulation area,” said Joe Distelheim, editor of The Huntsville
Times and chair of the Small Newspapers Committee.
“We’ve done that story, but that’s just a start. We hope this session will
help us continue to reach our traditional readers with that message... and reach
our new readers,” he said.
The program includes demographics expert Hazel Reinhardt talking about what
the rapidly changing demographics means to newspapers.
There will also be a panel of new immigrants talking about what they need
and want in a newspaper.
Other topics will include how to use the new census data on Latinos that comes
out in March, characteristics of Latino culture and editors with success stories.
The program begins with dinner Friday, Feb. 2 and ends Sunday noon. If you
would like to attend please go to the registration form on the ASNE Web site.
