ASNE on the move
ASNE high school project progresses
Between now and March, ASNE will take the lead in recruiting about 200 high
school teachers who advise student newspapers (or want to) for a two-week for-credit
training program emphasizing the core values of journalism and trends in daily
newspapering
The six colleges who will administer the program, selected from 31 applicants,
are:
Ball State University, Muncie, Ind.
Hampton University, Va.
Kent State University, Ohio
University of Maryland, College Park,
University of South Florida, Tampa
University of Texas, Austin
The Institute is one of three long-term initiatives launched by ASNE to revitalize
high school papers and encourage a diverse generation of young people to pursue
journalism careers. The High School Journalism Project has the financial support
of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
The other programs are:
ASNE partnerships: In the coming weeks, the first 25 partnerships between
daily newspapers and local high schools will be announced. Technology grants
of up to $5,000 will be awarded.
www.highschooljournalism.org: A Web site aimed at high school journalists,
their teachers, guidance counselors and professional journalists interested
in nurturing the scholastic press.
