ASNE on the move
Alabama editor, Giles, dies
Bruce Giles, the executive editor of The Tuscaloosa (Ala.) Times died
on Aug. 31 of cancer.
Giles’ newspaper career spanned 31 years in which he worked for The
Miami Herald and was the managing editor of both The Ledger in Lakeland,
Fla. and The Sarasota Herald-Tribune.
His high-profile career started on a high note. He was a student intern
on a reporting team that won a Pulitzer Prize at the Detroit Free Press
in 1967.
While in Miami, Giles developed a reputation for spending hours with
the county budget and other public records, digging out the facts and ground-breaking
stories.
This strong belief in open government would be a hallmark of his career.
“Bruce was a tough-minded newspaperman who was a classy addition to
Alabama newspapering,” said Joe Distelheim, editor of The Huntsville Times.
“What I'll remember, though, is that he was one of the really good guys.”
