Leadership
Ten Lessons from ASNE’s Leadership Conference
- Motivate others through recognition of great work. Focus on strengths, not
weaknesses.
- Show optimism about our business. Replace fear with passion.
- Focus on talent. Hire for it. “Cast” for it. Learn from those doing the
best work.
- Lead more outside the newsroom. Lead more inside the newsroom.
- Be more visible and “high touch.”
- Talk and model “to-die-for” values.
- Tell stories about the value of our work and the direction we’re headed.
- Follow The Platinum Rule: “Do unto others as they would like done unto
them.”
- Coach and develop middle managers.
- Proselytize — preach the joy and importance of journalism — to our staffs,
owners, communities and to each other.
