Leadership

Ten Lessons from ASNE’s Leadership Conference

  • Motivate others through recognition of great work. Focus on strengths, not weaknesses.
  • Show optimism about our business. Replace fear with passion.
  • Focus on talent. Hire for it. “Cast” for it. Learn from those doing the best work.
  • Lead more outside the newsroom. Lead more inside the newsroom.
  • Be more visible and “high touch.”
  • Talk and model “to-die-for” values.
  • Tell stories about the value of our work and the direction we’re headed.
  • Follow The Platinum Rule: “Do unto others as they would like done unto them.”
  • Coach and develop middle managers.
  • Proselytize — preach the joy and importance of journalism — to our staffs, owners, communities and to each other.
