ASNE on the move
ASNE’s ’98 convention shaping up
Media credibility will be a focus of the 1998 ASNE convention March
31 through April 3 at the J.W. Marriott in Washington, D.C.
The Convention Program Committee, under the leadership of Edward
W. Jones, managing editor, The Free Lance-Star, Fredericksburg, Va.,
plans to set the scene for the credibility discussion with a town meeting
featuring panelists from inside and outside the newspaper business. Other
program segments will deal with the latest research on credibility, correction
policies, media bias, discussions among those involved in specific media
credibility incidents, and success stories on credibility from outside
the newspaper business.
ASNE’s 75th convention also will be a time to celebrate good writing
— specifically, the 20th anniversary of the ASNE Distinguished Writing
Awards. Pulitzer Prize-winning film critic Roger Ebert will lead a discussion
involving past ASNE award winners. Among those participating will be Dave
Barry, Rick Bragg and Ellen Goodman.
The convention will deal with leadership in the newsroom, with an assist
from organizational guru Stephen Covey.
Invitations have been extended to President Clinton, British Prime Minister
Tony Blair, Colin Powell and Michael Eisner.
The 1998 convention will begin with a Tuesday afternoon session and
conclude with the Friday lunch. A reception on March 31 will be held at
the National Gallery of Art. It will follow the Tuesday afternoon session.
