ASNE on the move

Members here and there

ASNE members were at the forefront of the changing of the guard at The Freedom Forum: Al Neuharth turned over the chairmanship to Charles Overby, who also is chief executive officer. Peter Prichard assumed Overby’s role of president. And, Robert Giles retired from The Detroit News to begin a new career as senior vice president and executive director of the Media Studies Center. The Johns, Quinn and Seigenthaler, relinquished the titles of deputy chairman and First Amendment Center Chairman respectively, but will continue as trustees.

Among the recent Gannett Co. comings and goings, Mark Silverman was named to replace Giles as editor and publisher at The Detroit News, while Bennie Ivory took over for Silverman as executive editor and vice president/ news at The Courier-Journal in Louisville, Ky. Ivory was executive editor of The News Journal in Wilmington, Del. Cindy McCurry-Ross, formerly managing editor of the Salinas Californian, is now executive editor of the Gainesville (Ga.) Times. And Jackie Thomas left the Washington bureau of The Detroit News to become editorial page editor of The Sun, Baltimore. She replaced Joe Sterne who retired this month. Sterne will be a senior fellow at Johns Hopkins Institute for Policy Studies.

Janet Weaver becomes managing editor of the Sarasota (Fla.) Herald-Tribune on July 7. She was at Knight-Ridder’s The Wichita (Kan.) Eagle. Elsewhere in the group, Ken Doctor has left the managing editor position at the St. Paul Pioneer Press and is now vice president/editorial for Knight-Ridder New Media in San Jose, Calif. Paula Ellis, assistant to the publisher of The State, in Columbia, S.C., has been named publisher of The Sun News in Myrtle Beach, S.C. And Carrol Dadisman, publisher of the Tallahassee (Fla.) Democrat, retired June 30.

Mary Jo Meisner, formerly with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, is editor of the Community Newspaper Company in Needham, Mass. She has responsibility for the editorial content of 119 publications, six of which are dailies. Formerly managing editor of The Daily Telegram in Adrian, Mich., Bob Jodon was appointed publisher of The Daily Reporter in Coldwater, Mich. And John Goossen moved from publisher of the Grand Island (Neb.) Independent to the same position at the Topeka (Kan.) Capital-Journal.

Coming up: In mid-July at Harris Enterprises’ papers, Jim Bloom becomes editor and publisher of The Hutchinson (Kan.) News. His replacement as editor and publisher of The Garden City (Kan.) Telegram, will be Tom Bell, currently at The Chanute (Kan.) Tribune. In September, Gene Roberts will leave his three-year position as managing editor of The New York Times. He had been on a leave of absence from teaching at the University of Maryland. Bob Mong returns to Dallas in September as executive vice president of the Publishing Division of A.H. Belo Corp. He is currently publisher of the Messenger-Inquirer in Owensboro, Ky. (Neil Foote, former ASNE minority affairs director, has recently moved to Belo’s Publishing Division as well.)
