Members here and there
ASNE members were at the forefront of the changing of the guard at The
Freedom Forum: Al Neuharth turned over the chairmanship to Charles
Overby, who also is chief executive officer. Peter Prichard
assumed Overby’s role of president. And, Robert Giles retired from
The Detroit News to begin a new career as senior vice president and executive
director of the Media Studies Center. The Johns, Quinn and Seigenthaler,
relinquished the titles of deputy chairman and First Amendment Center Chairman
respectively, but will continue as trustees.
Among the recent Gannett Co. comings and goings, Mark Silverman
was named to replace Giles as editor and publisher at The Detroit News,
while Bennie Ivory took over for Silverman as executive editor and
vice president/ news at The Courier-Journal in Louisville, Ky. Ivory was
executive editor of The News Journal in Wilmington, Del. Cindy McCurry-Ross,
formerly managing editor of the Salinas Californian, is now executive editor
of the Gainesville (Ga.) Times. And Jackie Thomas left the Washington
bureau of The Detroit News to become editorial page editor of The Sun,
Baltimore. She replaced Joe Sterne who retired this month. Sterne
will be a senior fellow at Johns Hopkins Institute for Policy Studies.
Janet Weaver becomes managing editor of the Sarasota (Fla.) Herald-Tribune
on July 7. She was at Knight-Ridder’s The Wichita (Kan.) Eagle. Elsewhere
in the group, Ken Doctor has left the managing editor position at
the St. Paul Pioneer Press and is now vice president/editorial for Knight-Ridder
New Media in San Jose, Calif. Paula Ellis, assistant to the publisher
of The State, in Columbia, S.C., has been named publisher of The Sun News
in Myrtle Beach, S.C. And Carrol Dadisman, publisher of the Tallahassee
(Fla.) Democrat, retired June 30.
Mary Jo Meisner, formerly with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel,
is editor of the Community Newspaper Company in Needham, Mass. She has
responsibility for the editorial content of 119 publications, six of which
are dailies. Formerly managing editor of The Daily Telegram in Adrian,
Mich., Bob Jodon was appointed publisher of The Daily Reporter in
Coldwater, Mich. And John Goossen moved from publisher of the Grand
Island (Neb.) Independent to the same position at the Topeka (Kan.) Capital-Journal.
Coming up: In mid-July at Harris Enterprises’ papers, Jim Bloom
becomes editor and publisher of The Hutchinson (Kan.) News. His replacement
as editor and publisher of The Garden City (Kan.) Telegram, will be Tom
Bell, currently at The Chanute (Kan.) Tribune. In September, Gene
Roberts will leave his three-year position as managing editor of The
New York Times. He had been on a leave of absence from teaching at the
University of Maryland. Bob Mong returns to Dallas in September
as executive vice president of the Publishing Division of A.H. Belo Corp.
He is currently publisher of the Messenger-Inquirer in Owensboro, Ky. (Neil
Foote, former ASNE minority affairs director, has recently moved to
Belo’s Publishing Division as well.)
