Institute for Journalism Excellence Fellows gather at API

Twenty-four college journalism educators who were selected to the 1997 Institute for Journalism Excellence have completed a weeklong newspaper industry overview seminar at the American Press Institute in Reston, Va. The seminar, which took place June 9-14, included topics such as the evolving newsroom; ethics and credibility; who today’s newspaper readers are and who they’ll be in the future; database reporting; new media; newspaper design; and marketing the news.

The ASNE Fellows are now working as reporters and editors at newspapers around the country and in Canada until July 23, which will be followed by a two-day debriefing session in Chicago.

The goal of the seven-week summer institute, which is now in its third year, is to strengthen the connection between journalism education and daily newspapers. The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation has renewed funding for the institute for 1998-2000.
