Six degrees of Gregory Favre
By: Deborah Howell
This game is played just like the "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon" game.
Whoever you are, you ought to be able to establish a link to Sacramento
(Calif.) Bee Editor Gregory Favre in six tries.
To help you out, Favre has worked at the Sea Coast Echo of Bay St. Louis,
La. (when his family owned it); the late Jackson State Times in Mississippi;
the late Jacksonville (Fla.) Journal; The Atlanta Journal; the Dayton (Ohio)
Daily News; The Palm Beach (Fla.) Post; WPLG-TV in Miami; the Corpus Christi
(Texas) Caller-Times; the Chicago Daily News; the Chicago Sun-Times and,
finally, Sacramento.
Favre says he ought to have a bumper sticker on his car that says "Honk
If You Ever Worked for Gregory Favre." He said there are 29 editors of
daily newspapers in this country who have worked for him at one time or
another.
(He also believes that the editors are the last to know about any gossip
in their newsroom.)
How to play
Here are some examples of how to play: I worked for David Hall in St.
Paul, Minn. Hall worked for Favre in Chicago. That’s only two degrees.
Let’s take Janet Weaver, the new managing editor in Sarasota, Fla.,
and the co-editor of The American Editor. Weaver worked in Norfolk for
ASNE President Sandra Rowe. Rowe was on the ASNE Board with Favre. Still
only two degrees.
That’s the way it is with Gregory. You either worked for him or know
him.
Anyone who can’t get within six degrees of Favre wins a free and coveted
ASNE t-shirt.
