ASNE’s ’98 convention schedule now on Web

Though tentative, the convention schedule is now on the Web (http://www. asne.org/events/98convsked.htm)

The convention will be held March 31-April 3 at the J.W. Marriott in Washington. The meeting will begin with a 3 p.m. session on a Tuesday and conclude with the Friday luncheon, at 2:30 p.m.

Among the confirmed speakers are Walt Disney Company CEO Michael Eisner, Times-Mirror CEO Mark Willis, and Federal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan. Invitations are out to other luminaries, including President Clinton and Microsoft chairman Bill Gates.

Other confirmed portions include:

  • Duke University history professor John Hope Franklin, chairman of President Clinton’s Commission on Race Relations, in a conversation with Chicago Tribune columnist Clarence Page.
  • Management guru Stephen Covey ("The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People") is the lead-off speaker at the convention’s opening session on "The Editor as Leader," at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, March 31.
  • The convention’s centerpiece on Wednesday is a daylong focus on credibility. Part of that is a "town meeting" featuring editors from ASNE’s credibility think tank, and some from outside newspapering, including CBS anchor Dan Rather. Harvard University law professor Charles Ogletree will moderate. The sessions will be capped with substantive discussions of newsroom practices that affect the public’s trust.
  • Focus will be put on getting good writing in the newspaper. Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times critic, will moderate a discussion among Miami Herald columnist Dave Barry, New York Times correspondent Rick Bragg, Washington Post columnist Donna Britt, and Boston Globe associate editor Ellen Goodman.
  • Publishing photos in the aftermath of the death of Princess Diana, getting your paper read, how to survive in a small shop, and circulation success stories are other topics to be addressed.
