Newspapers pay a salary of $450 a week for the six-week residency — a total of $2,700. ASNE provides a stipend, housing allowance and travel to the host paper. Local transportation is the educator’s responsibility — in cooperation with the host. Also, the paper should help the educator find housing.

Key dates for the program:

Nov. 1: Application deadline.

June 8-12, 1998: American Press Institute newspaper seminar.

June 15-July 24: Residencies.

Aug. 3-4: Institute debriefing.

A committee meets in December to select the 20 1998 Fellows. ASNE members will be sent information about the Fellows and the program. Interested papers will be asked to respond with jobs and top choices to try to match educators and papers.

The educator will contact the editor for an interview; both must agree on the match and job duties.
