In other actions during the ASNE board meeting held in Portland, the directors:

  • Selected Seattle as the site of the ASNE convention in the year 2007.

  • Increased 1998 dues 5 percent over the dues that members have paid since 1996. Members at newspapers above 25,000 circulation will pay $525 per year; editors of newspapers in the 10,000-25,000 circulation range will pay $330 and members from newspapers under 10,000 circulation will pay $170. Retired members dues will be $85. Dues notices will be mailed Nov. 17. ASNE’s current budget anticipates income and expenses just over $1 million.
  • Altered membership policies and procedures to encourage applications from editors throughout the Americas. Also, deputy managing editors were added as eligible positions for membership.
