Hiring
Key questions
By Dan Duke
Here is an example of how the system works. On The Virginian-Pilot’s
copy desk, teamwork is one of the traits we interview for.
The "key actions" for teamwork are:
-
Building relationships
-
Exchanging information freely
-
Volunteering ideas and help
-
Building on others’ ideas
-
Supporting group decisions
-
Putting group goals ahead of individual goals.
Questions that we use to elicit "teamwork" answers are:
-
Sometimes it can be frustrating to get information from a reporter or an
assigning editor so you can improve a story. Please describe a situation
you’ve had like this. (What did you do?)
-
Describe a situation in which you were able to help out another copy editor
or some other co-worker.
-
In dealing with your co-workers, it’s difficult to know when you are being
overly demanding. Tell me about a time you might have been overly demanding.
