Diversity director to leave ASNE
ASNE diversity director Veronica Jennings has resigned to accept
a position with Times Mirror and Newsday, Melville, N.Y. Jennings has worked
in the ASNE position since June 1994. In her new position at Newsday, she
will be a Times Mirror Metpro.biz associate and will work in content development
and new products.
“Veronica has been an energetic and effective diversity director. She
has worked very hard, is strong-minded, and has been entirely committed
to ASNE’s diversity goals,” ASNE executive director Lee Stinnett said.
“In addition, she has been a joy to her colleagues on the ASNE staff, most
especially to me. She has won the respect of the various constituencies
of our diversity program, including ASNE members and the leaders of the
various minority groups.”
Jennings said in a resignation note, “I want to sincerely thank ASNE
for the wonderful opportunity and honor it has been to work for this organization.
I will miss very much all of the tremendous people I’ve been associated
with since 1994.”
ASNE launched a nationwide search to fill the position of diversity
director. Candidates for the position must have experience at a daily newspaper
and a background in newsroom diversity.
In terms of funds spent, newsroom diversity is ASNE’s single largest
undertaking. More than $375,000 is channeled into ASNE’s diversity projects
each year. “Driving the quest for newsroom diversity” is a priority in
the Society’s mission statement and ASNE has taken a leading role in this
area for two decades.
