ASNE on the move

If you are like most (probably all) of your colleagues at newspapers under 50,000 circulation, your newspaper wasn’t perfect today and you are trying to improve it.

Since 1993, the Small Newspapers Committee has offered a program to do just that. The committee organizes teams of interested editors, provides critiquing guidelines, and then arranges for the give-and-take of good ideas to flow.

Here are the requirements: You must swap a week’s papers with another editor, produce a detailed critique of his or her paper and attend the convention to take part in a one-on-one with your partner.

With few exceptions — people who agree to take part but drop the ball — the program has worked well.

The deadline is Feb. 15. We’ll need: your name, title, newspaper name, address, phone number, fax, e-mail address, daily and Sunday circulation. Finally, indicate if you have participated in the critique before and if you have a preference on who you are partnered with.

Mail it to David B. Offer, Editor, The Newport Daily News, 101 Malbone Road, Newport RI 02840; call him at 401/849-3300; fax him at 401/849-3306 or e-mail him at dbo@newportri.com.
