ASNE  on the move

Richard M. Schmidt Jr., ASNE legal counsel, received The Media Institute’s Freedom of Speech Award at a dinner on Oct. 29 in Washington. The award was presented by Washington Post ombudsman Geneva Overholser.

Schmidt, a partner in the Washington law firm of Cohn and Marks, spoke about the challenges of protecting the First Amendment over the 30 years that he has represented ASNE as legal counsel.

He told the group that he had an interest in First Amendment issues at the earliest age. "My father claimed that as a child, I loved to go into fire stations and yell ‘theater’!"

The Media Institute is a non-profit, First Amendment organization headquartered in Washington.
