ASNE on the move
Richard Allport, executive editor of The Florida Times-Union,
Jacksonville, will return to the corporate office of Morris Communications
as assistant to the president. Brian Toolan, former managing editor
of The Philadelphia Daily News, is now editor of The Hartford (Conn.) Courant.
He replaces David Barrett, who resigned back in September. Jimmy
Denley is the new editor of the Abilene (Texas) Reporter-News, a paper
recently acquired by Scripps-Howard. He had been editor and president of
the Birmingham (Ala.) Post-Herald. Retired member Reg Murphy,
former publisher of The Sun, Baltimore, has resigned his position as chief
executive of the National Geographic Society effective in March. He will
remain vice chairman of the society. Calvin Stovall is now managing
editor of the Courier-Post in Cherry Hill, N.J. He had been at Gannett
headquarters. Jim Crutchfield left the Press-Telegram in Long Beach,
Calif., when the sale of the paper by Knight-Ridder to Garden State Newspapers/
MediaNews Group was completed. Andy Glass, former chief of Cox Newspapers’
Washington bureau, has become senior correspondent for Cox. Mike Phillips
was promoted to publisher of The Sun, Bremerton, Wash. He had been
editor. David Jones, assistant managing editor of The New York Times,
has retired. And Addie Rimmer, editor of the Boulder (Colo.)
Daily Camera until it was traded to Scripps-Howard, is now deputy managing
editor/ news at the Detroit Free Press.
