ASNE on the move

Richard Beene is now president and chief executive officer of The Bakersfield Californian. He had been executive editor. The new editor and publisher of the Salina (Kan.) Journal is Tom Bell, who left the same position at the Garden City (Kan.) Telegram. Bob Burdick has been promoted to president and general manager of the Rocky Mountain News. He had been editor of the Denver paper. In addition to editing the Daily News, David Butler will be vice president of news for the Los Angeles Newspaper Group, a subsidiary of MediaNews Group. Shelby Coffey III, who resigned as editor of the Los Angeles Times last October, has been named executive vice president for ABC News. Colleen Conant, executive editor of the Daily Camera in Boulder, Colo., has assumed additional responsibilities as publisher and chief executive officer. Tippen Davidson has relinquished his duties as publisher of The News-Journal of Daytona Beach, Fla., but will continue as president, co-editor and chief executive officer. Jack Davis, formerly president and publisher of the Daily Press of Newport News, Va., has become president of Tribune Interactive in Chicago. On July 1, former ASNE president Gregory Favre turns over the executive editor reins of The Sacramento (Calif.) Bee to Rick Rodriguez, formerly managing editor. Favre will be full-time as vice president/news of The McClatchy Co., a position he has held part-time. When a successor is found, Mike Finney will leave as executive editor of the Omaha (Neb.) World-Herald. Finney has been named president of a subsidiary, World Media Co., which offers Internet products and services. Bob Haiman has been appointed a Freedom Forum fellow, with focus on the Free Press/Fair Press initiative. Haiman is president emeritus of The Poynter Institute for Media Studies. Bill Ketter, another past president of ASNE, resigned after 20 years as editor of The Patriot Ledger in Quincy, Mass. Ketter will work for a period as op-ed editor of The Boston Globe. Joel Kramer has resigned as publisher of the Star Tribune in Minneapolis. Janet Leach took over in March as editor of The Beacon Journal in Akron, Ohio. She had been managing editor of The Cincinnati Enquirer. John Moore left as executive editor of the San Luis Obispo County (Calif.) Telegram-Tribune to become county editor of the Ventura County (Calif.) Star. New members Chuck Pukanecz and Steve Trosley have new positions. Pukanecz was promoted to vice president of news, Journal Register Company, Trenton, N.J., where he had been editorial director. And Trosley, who was elected to membership while executive editor of the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin in Ontario, Calif., is now publisher of the Norwalk (Ohio) Reflector. On the move with Landmark Communications in Virginia, Alan Sorensen becomes editorial page editor of The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk on July 6. His recent position as director of strategic development for the company followed years as editorial page editor of The Roanoke Times. Warren Watson resigned as executive editor of Central Maine Newspapers, and is now an associate director of the American Press Institute, Reston, Va.
