Institute for Journalism Excellence

Could you use help next summer from journalism educators looking for work as assignment editors, reporters, copy editors, photographers, artists and web masters?

The ASNE Institute for Journalism Excellence forges ties between people on the forefront of innovation and change at daily newspapers and educators who are shaping the next generation of journalists.

The Institute, funded by the John S. and James Knight Foundation, covers a weeklong industry update for the educators at the American Press Institute, a stipend in addition to the salary from newspapers, transportation and housing costs and a debriefing session after the work residency.

In the essays that follow, two 1998 Fellows describe how they got a fresh perspective on daily journalism as the newspapers they worked for benefited from their expertise, enthusiasm and hard work.

Klos is project director for ASNE.
