ASNE on the move
This fall, ASNE will host two journalism short courses to encourage
minority college and high schools students to pursue journalism careers.
These one-day programs provide opportunities for editors to share their
passion for newspapering with young people, high school newspaper advisors
and college journalism faculty. Since 1991, the about 1,600 students at
27 college campuses have participated in the program. Many of the short
courses have been done through partnerships with the four national minority
journalist associations.
The first journalism short course will be held Nov. 18 at Hampton University,
in Hampton, Va. The keynote luncheon speaker will be William Sutton Jr.,
deputy managing editor of The News & Observer in Raleigh, N.C., and
an alumnus of Hampton. Caesar Andrews, editor of Gannett News Service will
conduct a special workshop on media ethics. About a dozen media professionals
are scheduled to participate in the short course, which is co-sponsored
with the National Association of Black Journalists.
In December, ASNE will head west to the University of Southern California
in Los Angeles for our second short course. The Dec. 5 USC program is just
starting to take shape. Catalina Camia, the newly elected president of
the Asian American Journalists Association and a USC graduate, has been
invited to be the keynote speaker.
Editors interested in attending or nominating staff members for the
fall short courses can contact Veronica Jennings, ASNE diversity director;
