Selected by a screening committee from more than 210 entrants, these
are among the honorees that presented their work at the Columbia Workshop
on Journalism, Race and Ethnicity. A complete list of honorees and their

Elizabeth Llorente, immigration and ethnicity reporter, The Record, Hackensack,
N.J., for her series, “A Tale of Two Cultures,” on Korean and Guatemalan
immigrants in New Jersey, and for other stories.

The Los Angeles Times for its overall coverage of a multicultural metropolis
and for recent initiatives to strengthen coverage of Latinos and to re-examine
its newsroom culture. Mark Willes, chairman of Times Mirror, and Frank
del Olmo, associate editor of the Times, represented the newspaper.

The San Francisco Examiner for its project, “The New City,” a look at San
Francisco’s changing face, and for its series, “Making the Grade,” a look
at education and the black middle class. Sharon Rosenhause, managing editor,
and Annie Nakao, race and ethnicity reporter, represented the paper.

The Seattle Times for coverage of Initiative 200, a ballot proposal to
roll back affirmative action in Washington. Carole Carmichael, assistant
managing editor, represented the Times.
