ASNE members on the move
Bill Burleigh, president and CEO of The E.W. Scripps Co., has
also been elected chairman. At The Brazosport Facts in Clute, Texas, Wanda
Garner Cash has been promoted from managing editor to executive editor.
Judy Pace Christie has resigned as executive editor of Florida Today
in Melbourne. She will stay in Florida for the time being, do some work
for Gannett and continue as chair of ASNE’s Ethics and Values Committee.
David Cooper, associate editor of the Akron (Ohio) Beacon
Journal retired in March. In New Orleans, Malcolm Forsyth, editorial
page editor of The Times-Picayune, announced that he would retire at the
end of the year. Donald Holt retired in April. He had been editor
of New York’s Journal of Commerce. Ed Kelley will stay in Oklahoma
City as editorial director of The Daily Oklahoman. He had been managing
editor of the paper and was expected to return to the paper’s Washington
bureau. Also at the Oklahoman, Mike Perry became metro editor.
He had been editor of The Spectrum in St. George, Utah. Ted Natt,
former editor and publisher of The Daily News in Longview, Wash., will
move to the retired rolls following the sale of the paper to Howard Publications.
He will have an office at the paper for the next year and will fulfill
his duties as Nominations Committee chair. Randy Hammer is the new
executive editor at the Pensacola (Fla.) News Journal. He had held the
same position at another Gannett property, the Springfield (Mo.) News-Sun.
Hammer replaced Teresa Wasson who returned to Tennessee for personal
reasons. In Ohio, Ellen Stein Burbach is now editor of the Sunday
Magazine of The Plain Dealer in Cleveland. She was previously director
of editorial product development for Thomson Newspapers. Ben Taylor
continues as chairman of the Globe Newspaper Company, while a new publisher
has been named at The Boston Globe. Taylor had been publisher since 1997.
Bob Unger is now editor-in-chief of Community Newspaper Company’s
Metro Unit in Needham, Mass. He had been executive editor of the St. Joseph
(Mo.) News-Press. In Emporia, Kansas, Barbara Walker moved from
editor to senior editor. And at the Fort Worth (Texas) Star-Telegram, Jim
Witt, executive editor, takes on additional responsibilities as publisher
of the Arlington edition.
