These are the newest reports from ASNE:
Examining Our Credibility: Perspectives of the Public and the Press
This ground-breaking survey, part of the Journalism Credibility Project,
helps editors better understand credibility fault lines. In addition to
the public’s opinion, the study asked journalists what they thought. Though
there are many similarities, the differences are telling. A must-read for
any editor. A 108-page book, $13 ($30 outside the United States). There
are also two credibility videotapes suitable for brown-bag lunches or training
seminars. One explores the issue in a lively roundtable forum. The other
is a session explaining the Perspectives of the Public and the Press report.
Each videotape is $15 ($25 outside the United States; NTSC format).
The Local News Handbook
Although most editors know local news when they see it, this extensive,
hands-on report attempts to define it more completely. Full of research
and great concepts — some from outside newspapers — the handbook asks what
readers want and what is essential. A 210-page book, $15 ($40 outside the
United States).
Bringing the World Home
Readers need to know more about the world because the world is part
of their lives in ways that they often don’t realize — ways that are easily
covered if journalists do what they do best: report, write, edit. This
handbook explains how newspapers can bring the world closer to their readers
and make themselves more relevant and useful. An 84-page book, $9 ($15
outside the United States).
Making Change
Case studies of change at three newspapers — The Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel,
the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times and The Gazette of Colorado Springs — offer
different scenarios employing new ideas to reach readers. This report offers
practical information and insights for editors grappling with change or
preparing to launch something new. A 28-page booklet $6.50 ($15 outside
the United States).
Technology & Pagination: Integrating the New into Your Newsroom
Published jointly with the Society for News Design, this detailed report
takes editors step by step through pagination. This is especially good
for those editors at mid-sized and smaller newspapers. A 124-page report,
$15 ($30 outside the United States).
The Next Media Reader
A report looking at the current status and emerging issues of online
media with chapters from several leaders in the field. $10 ($20 outside
the United States).
