Pet peeve: Inattention to detail.

Luxury defined: Early December in St. Bart's, sans kids.

Most dangerous story: Investigation of corrupt sheriff. He resigned in midterm. Paper won Scripps Howard Public Service Award for our work.

My newspaper's strength: Local news rules!

Most admired editor: Ed Johnson, former executive editor of The Gainesville (Fla.) Sun.

Favorite publication: After mine, The New York Times.

Best part of job: Thanking staff for a job well done. Running stories about people in need and watching the community respond.

Worst part of job: Firing.
