ASNE on the move

Plans for the 2000 convention, April 11-14 in Washington, are shaping up well.

The theme of this year's convention, "Connecting With Communities," ties in with ASNE's concentrations this year: diversity, credibility and readership. A full morning of programming will be dedicated to each subject.

Tuesday afternoon's opening session, featuring Arthur Sulzberger Jr. and other notables, will focus on the future of newspapers.

Important reports and announcements will be released at the convention, including research results and ideas from the Journalism Credibility Project test-site papers, noteworthy new diversity initiatives and an update on the Readership Initiative.

President Clinton, who has spoken at five conventions, is invited, as are the major presidential candidates.

Receptions will be held at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center (across the street from the convention hotel) and the Newseum.

Karla Garrett Harshaw, editor of the Springfield (Ohio) News-Sun, chairs the Convention Program Committee.
