ASNE on the move
At the Sarasota (Fla.) Herald-Tribune, Diane McFarlin has been
promoted to associate publisher. Janet Weaver, formerly managing
editor, replaces McFarlin as executive editor. McFarlin is ASNE treasurer.
In changes at Knight Ridder corporate, Clark Hoyt returned to
D.C. as Washington editor. He will supervise the bureau and wire service.
Jerry Ceppos succeeded Hoyt and will become the sole vice president/news
at the first of the year when Marty Claus leaves her current position.
David Yarnold was promoted from managing editor to executive editor
of the San Jose (Calif.) Mercury News, succeeding Ceppos. David Hall
resigned as editor of The Plain Dealer in Cleveland. His replacement is
Doug Clifton, who had been executive editor of The Miami Herald.
Sue Deans moved to Colorado as assistant managing editor/ Sunday
for Scripps’ Denver Rocky Mountain News. She had been editor of The Sun
News in Myrtle Beach, S.C., a Knight Ridder property.
Karen Jurgensen is now editor of USA Today. She had been editorial
page editor. Jurgensen succeeded David Mazzarella, who retired. Also at
USA Today, John Simpson left his position as deputy editor.
In April, Dan Warner retired as editor of The Eagle-Tribune in
Lawrence, Mass. Steve Lambert, formerly editor of the Daily Times
in Primos, Pa., is Warner’s replacement.
Stan Tiner is now executive editor of The Daily Oklahoman, Oklahoma
City. Ed Kelley, formerly managing editor of the paper, has moved
back to Washington as bureau chief. On Tiner’s departure from the Mobile
(Ala.) Register, Mike Marshall was promoted from managing editor
to editor.
After stints at The Financial Post in Toronto, and The Hamilton (Ontario)
Spectator, Maryanne McNellis has relocated to California where she
is president of the Los Angeles Times’ national edition. Kirk LaPointe
has returned to The Hamilton Spectator after spending six months as executive
editor of The National Post in Don Mills, Ontario. This time around he
has added associate publisher to his editor-in-chief title.
Paul Neely resigned as associate publisher of the Chattanooga
(Tenn.) Times/ Chattanooga Free Press. He had been publisher of the Times
before the paper was sold and merged.
