Pet peeve: Writers and copy editors who have forgotten difference between "to lay" and "to lie."

Most dangerous story: Covering the violent white supremacist hate groups.

Best story: Covering the violent white supremacist hate groups and giving the readers opportunities to constructively challenge racism in our region.

Best interview and why: Robin Lee Graham, youngest boy to sail alone around the world. His heroics were an inspiration, but his life atop a mountainreminded us that great feats don't reap happiness. That takes work and faith every day.

Most admired editor: Don Gormley, former managing editor, The Chicago Daily News and the man who hired me in Spokane.

Most admired writer: Stephen Ambrose, author of "Undaunted Courage."
