ASNE on the move
N. Christian Anderson III, publisher and CEO of The Orange County
Register, Santa Ana, Calif., was elected ASNE president April 16 in San
Francisco.
Anderson succeeds Edward L. Seaton, editor-in-chief of The Manhattan
(Kan.) Mercury, who will continue on the board ex-oficio for one year.
Other officers who advance on ASNE’s ladder were Richard A. Oppel,
editor of the Austin (Texas) American-Statesman, vice president; Tim
J. McGuire, editor and senior vice president of new media for the Star
Tribune, Minneapolis, secretary; and Diane H. McFarlin, executive
editor and director of broadcast for the Sarasota (Fla.) Herald-Tribune,
treasurer.
Seven directors were elected to the ASNE board: Gilbert Bailon,
executive editor of The Dallas Morning News; Kenneth F. Bunting,
managing editor of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer; Susan C. Deans,
assistant managing editor, The Denver Rocky Mountain News; and Frank
M. Denton, editor of the Wisconsin State Journal, Madison.
ASNE members also re-elected three incumbent directors: Richard Aregood,
editorial page editor of The Star-Ledger, Newark; Rick Rodriguez,
executive editor of The Sacramento (Calif.) Bee; and David A. Zeeck,
executive editor, The News Tribune, Tacoma, Wash.
Aregood, Deans, Denton, Rodriguez and Zeeck were elected for three years,
Bailon for two years and Bunting a one.
Board members continuing as directors are: Peter K. Bhatia, executive
editor, The Oregonian, Portland; Jennie Buckner, editor, The Charlotte
(N.C.) Observer; Karla Garrett Harshaw, editor, Springfield (Ohio)
News-Sun; Edward W. Jones, managing editor, The Free Lance-Star,
Fredericksburg, Va.; Linda C. Lightfoot, executive editor, The Advocate,
Baton Rouge, La.; Wanda S. Lloyd, managing editor/features, administration
and planning, The Greenville (S.C.) News; Robert G. McGruder,
executive editor, Detroit Free Press; and Gregory L. Moore, managing
editor, The Boston Globe.
Three members left the board: John S. Carroll, editor, The Sun,
Baltimore; Deborah Howell, editor, Newhouse News Service; and Ralph
E. Langer, Dallas.
