ASNE on the move

The ASNE board of directors passed  this resolution April 16:

ASNE, acknowledging the importance of Operation Allied Force and the American public’s interest in the conduct of the operation, further notes that:

On April 15, 1999, President Clinton promised to work with NATO and U.S. allies to get more information out more quickly;

Thus far, on many days, the state-controlled Yugoslav media have been more specific about NATO targets than the United States or NATO;

Thus far, the military campaign in the Balkans is one of the most important U.S. military efforts in recent years, yet the Defense Department has supplied far less information than in the Persian Gulf War and Desert Fox operation;

The American press recognizes the government’s right withhold information that could endanger members of the military, and will commit to continue our history of cooperation; therefore

Be it resolved that the Society strongly urges the Department of Defense to reconsider the dramatic reduction in cooperation with the news media and to broadly expand the release of information to serve the needs of a democratic society.
