ASNE on the move

Gary Blonston, Washington bureau chief of Knight Ridder, died April 4. He was 56. He had been a member of ASNE since 1995. A gifted writer, colleagues from his time in Detroit, San Jose, Miami and Washington said his management and editing style helped bring out gifted writing in others. A scholarship in his name is being set up at Northwestern University, where Blonston attended on scholarship. Organizers hope to set up a $100,000 endowment to fund it. David Goodenow, managing editor of the now-defunt Los Angeles Herald-Examiner, died March 4. He was 78 and had been an ASNE member for nearly 30 years. Goodenow worked his way to the top after starting as a copy boy. He retired as assistant to the publisher in 1982.

Meg Greenfield, editor of The Washington Post editorial page, died May 13 at  age 68. She had been a member of ASNE since 1972. Known for her forceful editorials and love of irony, Greenfield shaped the influential page upon joining the staff as an editorial writer in 1968. In 1978, she won the Pulitzer Prize for editorial writing, becoming editor in 1979.
