ASNE on the move

The ASNE board passed a motion to promote diversity in journalism schools:

Whereas, the American Society of Newspaper Editors has adopted five key benchmarks to monitor the diversity progress at America’s daily newspapers;

Whereas, ASNE recognizes that America’s colleges and universities, with their journalism programs and their collegiate newspapers, are crucial to supplying quality new journalists for America’s newsrooms;

Whereas, ASNE understands the journalism programs and the collegiate newspapers at those colleges and universities are working to attract people of color to their programs;

ASNE encourages and supports the efforts of those colleges and universities to attract people of color into journalism and college newspapers;

ASNE also urges the journalism departments and college newspapers to adopt their own benchmarks to monitor their own progress in attracting and graduating students of color and in hiring a diverse faculty.
