Tal Campbell retired as executive editor of The News-Herald in
Willoughby, Ohio, and has taken on new challenges as director of public
information at Pepperdine University in Malibu, Calif. Frank Caperton,
executive editor of The Indianapolis Star and The Indianapolis News, has
announced that he will retire at the end of the year. The afternoon News
will close on Oct. 1. Wanda Garner Cash is now editor and publisher
of The Baytown (Texas) Sun. She left the executive editor position at The
Brazosport Facts in Clute, Texas. Southern Newspapers owns both properties.
Jimmy Denley has moved to The Commercial Appeal in Memphis where
he is director of new media. He had been editor of the Abilene (Texas)
Reporter-News. Jim Godbold has been promoted to the new position
of executive editor of The Register-Guard in Eugene, Ore. He had been managing
editor. J. Ford Huffman is now deputy managing editor/graphics and
photo at USA Today. He had been managing editor/features, graphics and
photo for Gannett News Service. Joe Karius, former publisher of
the Brookings (S.D.) Daily Register, is now publisher of The Bennington
(Vt.) Banner. At The Buffalo (N.Y.) News, Murray Light has his retirement.
On Sept. 20, Margaret Sullivan, currently the paper's managing editor,
will replace Light as editor. Retired member Joe Stroud, former
editorial page editor of the Detroit Free Press, has been appointed interim
director of the Gerald Ford Institute for Public Policy and Service at
Albion College in Albion, Mich.
