A bureau office of the newspaper of ASNE's sole Latin American member, Rafael Santos (managing editor of El Tiempo in Bogota, Colombia) was bombed Dec. 28. A security guard was injured and nearby buildings in Medellin were damaged by the explosion. Santos will be profiled next issue in The American Editor.

Al Johnson, executive editor of the Columbus (Ga.) Ledger-Enquirer and a member of ASNE's board of directors, has resigned to become associate publisher of the Houston Business Journal.

At the Albany (N.Y.) Times Union Jeff Cohen takes on the title of editor and Harry Rosenfeld becomes editor at large. Marty Kaiser moves up to editor of The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, replacing Mary Jo Meisner, who resigned. Jim Mortimer moves full-time as publisher of the Deseret News, giving ASNE past president John Hughes the other part of his title - editor of the Salt Lake City paper.

From editor to publisher: Tim Kelly at the Lexington (Ky.) Herald-Leader. From president and associate publisher to publisher: Reid Ashe at the Tampa (Fla.) Tribune.

In Wichita, Buzz Merritt turned over the editor reins to Rick Thames, to become a public journalism consultant to Knight-Ridder newspapers.

Bob Ritter went to Gannett Suburban Newspapers outside New York as editor and vice president for news, replacing Paulson. And Caesar Andrews left senior managing editor at Gannett Suburban to assume Ritter's duties as editor of Gannett News Service in Arlington, Va.

Ken Paulson was named executive director of the First Amendment Center in Nashville. Former ASNE president John Seigenthaler, formerly with the Nashville Tennessean and USA Today, received the Elijah Parish Lovejoy Award in November at Colby College. He was the college's 44th Lovejoy fellow.

Also, Arnold Garson departed San Bernardino, Calif., and arrived in Sioux Falls, S.D., where he is publisher of the Argus Leader. Member applicant Ricardo Pimentel replaced Garson as editor of the Sun. John Johnson resigned from his position as editor of the Clarion-Ledger in Jackson, Miss.

Howard Weaver became editorial page editor of the Sacramento (Calif.) Bee on Jan. 1. He had been assistant to the president of McClatchy Newspapers. Kelso Gillenwater will move from publisher of the Tacoma (Wash.) News Tribune to vice president of operations for McClatchy Newspapers in Sacramento.

Karen Wada advances from assistant managing editor of the Los Angeles Times to deputy managing editor, with added newsroom responsibilities.

Ralph Langer, senior vice president and executive editor of the Dallas Morning News, was named executive vice president and editor. Gilbert Bailon, deputy managing editor, was named to take his place as executive editor.

Religion News Service editor Joan Connell is moving to Seattle to join her husband. She will continue with RNS as senior editor; David Anderson was named editor of the Washington-based news service.

Dan Rosenheim left the managing editor spot at the San Francisco Chronicle at the end of December to become news director of KRON. Both the newspaper and station are owned by the same company.

David Lipman, former managing editor of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and chairman of Pulitzer/ 2000 since 1992, retired Dec. 31 and will continue as a retired member of ASNE.

Welcome back to David Butler who rejoins the ASNE ranks as editor of the Daily News of Los Angeles.

Former member Joann Byrd became editorial page editor at the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. ASNE's membership squad is pursuing her for reconnecting.
