And the finalists are - 16 talented student journalists selected to produce The ASNE Reporter, our daily convention newspaper.

"These students - a multicultural harbinger of the future of journalism - are bright, articulate and savvy," said Los Angeles Times feature writer Michael Quintanilla, editor of this year's Reporter. "They are eager for the challenge that ASNE will present."

The pool was the largest in the past three years. Sixty-four students submitted resumes, work samples and recommendations for the slots by the December deadline.

The 1997 News Lab class has plenty of experience, energy and involvement in journalism. Most finalists have completed at least two newspaper internships, and many are active on their campus newspapers. Many are leaders in collegiate journalism organizations.

The nine women and seven men selected for the 1997 ASNE News Lab are:

  • Samar Abulhassan, senior, Wayne State University, reporter

  • Georgina Acosta, senior, Florida A&M University, copy editor

  • Louis Clotman, senior, Morehouse College, reporter

  • J.C. Conklin, junior, University of Washington, reporter

  • Emilio Flores, senior, California State University, Northridge, photographer

  • Maria Teresa Garcia, junior, California Polytechnic State University, reporter

  • Harold Goodridge, senior, Norfolk State University, reporter

  • Boaz Herzog, junior, Northwestern University, reporter

  • Tracy Jan, junior, Stanford University, reporter

  • Samantha A. Levine, senior, William & Mary College, reporter

  • Michael Allen Logan, senior, Emerson College, reporter

  • Elysia L. Richardson, senior, Florida A&M University, reporter

  • Antonio L. Sharp, senior, Texas Southern University, reporter

  • Michael Vega, senior, University of Texas at Arlington, reporter

  • Jenrong (J.R.) Wu, senior, University of Missouri, reporter

  • Stephanie Yao, senior, University of New Mexico, photographer

The staff will publish four issues during the convention, starting April 8. They will provide up-to-date information on activities and schedules.

The project is coordinated by ASNE's Diversity Committee and supported by the ASNE Foundation. Advertising students from Howard University, supervised by a Washington Post professional, handle ad sales. About 25 other professionals will help produce the newspaper.

ASNE members can assist the project also. ASNE is seeking newspaper sponsors to help defray transportation costs for students. Seven ASNE newspapers provided financial assistance for student travel last year. Also, ads can be placed in The ASNE Reporter for $450 to $1,000, with color available. If your newspaper would like to sponsor a student or place an ad in the newspaper, contact ASNE Diversity Director Veronica Jennings at 703/453-1126.
