Once there was an editor at a large competitive metro who annually gathered the
top 10 single-copy-selling issues of his newspaper that year and analyzed what
made them must-reads. After years of looking at what people wanted and giving
them that, his paper became the best-read paper in the market. After a few more
years, that market became one paper less competitive. With that in mind, The American
Editor asked editors at several papers to share their top-selling issues of the
year, why they think they sold well and what kind of system their newspaper has
in place for capitalizing on this knowledge.
