ASNE/Freedom Forum join in initiative to strengthen high school newspapers

The Freedom Forum has funded an ASNE demonstration project to establish partnerships between local newspapers and high school journalism programs in inner-city and rural areas.

The goals of the $40,000 project are:

  • To strengthen fledgling high school newspapers through professional assistance and involvement.

  • To provide access to desktop publishing systems that will allow students to produce high-quality publications and connect to the Internet and World Wide Web.

  • To attract and motivate a diverse group of students, particularly black, Asian, Hispanic and Native Americans into journalism.

  • To encourage reading and writing among young people.

ASNE is seeking 12 newspaper partners to set up new or upgraded electronic publishing systems in 12 high schools nationwide.

Newspapers will nominate schools from their area for participation in the program. Each newspaper sponsor will be asked to make a $2,500 matching grant to purchase equipment and to assign staff professionals to work on the project.

ASNE minority affairs director Veronica T. Jennings is coordinating the project. Editors interested in learning more about the project should get in touch with her.
