ASNE has requested permission to join in the lawsuit brought by the South Carolina Press Association against the U.S. government regarding the Boxer-Moran bill, which restricts press access to motor-vehicle registration information.

The suit seeks to overturn the Driver's Privacy Act of 1994, arguing that it violates the First and Fourteenth Amendments. It was filed in the United States District Court for the District of South Carolina, Columbia Division.

The law establishes penalties for media that publish information obtained through drivers licensee and motor-vehicle registrations.

Certain commercial interests, however, retain their access to motor-vehicle information under the law.
