Julius Gius of Somis, Calif., died recently at age 84 He was the longtime editor of the Ventura County (Calif.) Star-Free Press. He joined ASNE in 1953 and edited the Bremerton (Wash.) Sun for many years before going to California.

Bill Southerland, 50, executive editor of the Waterbury (Conn.) Republican-American, died of cancer in November. Before becoming the Republican-American's editor in 1989, Southerland was a longtime executive with Gannett, where he was editor of the Springfield (Mo.) News-Leader. He also edited newspapers in Virginia and Ohio. Southerland joined ASNE in 1980.
