ASNE on the move

Richard Oppel, editor of the Austin (Texas) American-Statesman, has been elected to become ASNE treasurer. He takes the post in April and becomes president in 2000.

He has been a member of ASNE since 1977 and has headed a number of key committees. He headed the 1996 Convention Program and currently co-chairs the editorial board of The American Editor. He has also had an active role on the Society's Freedom of Information, Readership, Minorities and Future of Newspapers committees. He was elected to the ASNE board in 1993.

Oppel became editor of the American-Statesman in July 1995, following a long career with Knight-Ridder.
