Visiting a high school or college journalism class this fall? ASNE can
help you and your newsroom staffers with two new resources:
-
With the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, ASNE has produced
"Hispanics on Deadline," a 15-minute videotape editors can show to students
on newspaper journalism careers.
The tape features nine Latino journalists, including ASNE members
Gilbert Bailon, Dallas Morning News, and Barbara E. Gutierrez of Miami's
El Nuevo Herald, talking about how to get started in journalism, the importance
of communication skills, and newsroom diversity.
The project was initiated by Robert W. Mong, Owensboro (Ky.) Messenger-Inquirer,
and coordinated by Larry O'Donnell, formerly of Dow Jones Newspaper Fund.
The Los Angeles Times Foundation paid for duplication.
The tape is available from ASNE for $5 each. A limited number of copies
will be given free to high school journalism workshops and nonprofit groups.
-
Hot off the presses - the 1997 edition of ASNE's internship guide. This
year's free guide lists 201 newspaper internships, as well as useful information
on ASNE regional minority job fairs and other programs to assist minority
students.
Minorities Committee member James Clark, Orlando Sentinel, compiled
information with help from committee colleague, Susan Denley, Los Angeles
Times. The Sentinel printed 10,000 copies.
